Laser-supported dental decay diagnosis

Diagnodent®

The goal of decay diagnosis is to detect tooth damage as early as possible in order to be able to provide prompt treatment. X-rays are not always sufficient for this.

The DIAGNOdent® pen provides new possibilities here: It utilises the different “fluorescence” and density of healthy and diseased tooth substance. The teeth are irradiated with laser light; decayed areas glow in red in this light, whereas healthy tooth enamel appears in pale blue. The values that are determined are also indicated acoustically and digitally.

The advantages of the DIAGNOdent® pen:

  • We can detect decay without using X-rays (i.e. radiation-free) with the diagnostic camera. This is particularly beneficial for children and pregnant women.
  • The decay detection is more reliable, and usually occurs sooner than with other methods (X-rays, probing, visually with the naked eye).
  • This particularly applies to decay in the fissures (depressions in the chewing surfaces of the molars) and between the teeth.
  • Early detection requires less therapy effort and is a minimally invasive procedure which preserves healthy tooth substance. Smaller fillings are therefore often possible, among other things. Decay that is in the early stages can sometimes even be rectified by simply applying enamel-strengthening fluoride.
  • In many cases, drilling and filling can be avoided completely.
